We give you back control over your data

We want to live in a world where the rights to privacy and data protection are respected.

With zeitkapsl, we ensure that your photos and videos are safe from big tech corporations and hackers.

    Co-Founder

Peter designed our system architecture, security, and backend, and built the shared core used across all our clients. He shapes the strategy and vision, but don’t be surprised if he’s also the one answering your support tickets late at night.

I stored photos on external drives for years and tested numerous self-hosting solutions. The data stays private, but it’s very high maintenance. I want to enable privacy to everyone, not only tech-savvy people.

Oliver is behind our fast web interface and is our resident Svelte5 expert. He brings clarity, speed, and a focus on usability to everything on the web, and also takes care of grant proposals, including securing our first FFG grant.

As a father of three, I feel a responsibility to protect my children’s digital sovereignty. If we don’t take action today, the next generation won’t have a choice tomorrow.

    Security & AI researcher

Simeon joined zeitkapsl in autumn 2024. He leads our work on cryptography, AI, and the systems that power indexing and search.

I’ve always wanted to de-Google my life as much as possible. Joining zeitkapsl means I can finally work on something that aligns with that goal. Here, I’m not just contributing to a product, but to a vision of digital freedom and privacy that I truly believe in.

    Fullstack engineer

Miruna built our first prototypes, from the desktop app to the Google Photos importer and the initial Android version. Based in Barcelona (with occasional stops in Vienna), she specializes in computer vision.

Helping build zeitkapsl isn’t just fun, technically speaking, it also feels like doing something meaningful, as our solution gives users control and protection over their private data in times of data-driven algorithms and data monetisation. I believe it takes courage and dedication to offer a product that competes with those provided by well-established companies, and I am glad to be part of a team that has both.

    iOS Developer

Lukas works with us as an independent contractor. He focuses mainly on the iOS app, and his intuition for simple, thoughtful design shapes much of the zeitkapsl experience.

What excites me about zeitkapsl is building a truly native iOS app that feels fast, intuitive, and private. We don’t settle for hybrid shortcuts — here I can craft an experience that is simple, beautiful, and trustworthy, without compromise.

Technology companies are starving for data to train their AI models. It is only a matter of time before promises are broken and your pictures and memories are pulled into a training pipeline. Privacy can't be built on promises, it needs to be built on proven encryption without backdoors.

I support Zeitkapsl in its strategic and business development, with the goal of making data protection a reality, not just a promise. Memories should stay where they belong: with us.

Our journey so far

90 Seconds Idea Competition

The idea came in 2019. It wasn't until 2023 that we decided to bring it to life. In a 90-second pitch, we convinced the jury and secured 2nd place.

Prototype

We managed to design a prototype that met our standards for security, privacy, and robustness, proving the feasibility of the idea.

Build! Program Move

We convinced the jury of the Build! Startup Center and were accepted into the Move program. This was our first funding. Another one from AplusB followed immediately.

Build! Program Run

We demonstred impressive progress and hence were accepted into the follow up run program.

Private Alpha

We invited friends and family to test zeitkapsl. We got a lot of very valuable feedback, which we incorporated into our product.

Public Beta

On an invite only basis, we launched our public beta. This was a huge milestone for us. Apps were released for iOS and Android.

We are live

We got rid of the invite codes and took all courage together and announced our launch on r/BuyFromEU. The response was overwhelimng for us.

zeitkapsl is profitable

Even without venture capital, we reached profitability at a very small scale, proving that privacy-first software can be sustainable on its own.

Open-Source

All zeitkapsl apps are Open-Source and available on Codeberg under GPLv3.

1,000,000 memories

Why we started all of this

Like many others, we put our photos in the cloud for convenience. Never loose any photos again because your phone broke. Easily share with friends and family. This all sounds very great, right?

Over time, we realized what that really meant: handing over our most personal moments to companies whose business is built on exploiting data. Once we saw it, we couldn’t ignore it anymore.

We tried self-hosting. For years. It gave us control, but it came with endless maintenance — and it was only an option for experts, not for our families or friends. And certainly not for the average hard working mom and dad who just want to keep their precious memories safe.

At the same time, we kept searching for a solution that combined privacy, ease of use, and European values, like the right to privacy and data protection. Sadly, nothing came even close.

That’s when we said: then let’s build it ourselves.

Our Mission šŸŽÆ

zeitkapsl began with a simple goal: to create a photo storage service we would actually trust ourselves. Something that feels as easy as Google Photos, but without the trade-off of giving your life away or the vendo lock-in you get from Apple.

With end-to-end encryption built in, not even we can see your photos. What you upload stays yours, always.

Our Values

Photos and videos are not just files. They’re fragments of our identity and tell our whole life’s story. Once exposed, they can’t be taken back. And with AI multiplying the ways data can be misused, protecting them has never been more urgent.

zeitkapsl is our way of proving that technology can be secure, private, and human-centered — without being complicated.

Privacy is worth Protecting šŸ”

For us, privacy isn’t a feature — it’s the foundation of freedom. Every design decision starts with the question: does this protect the user?

Being independent 🤘

Our goal isn’t growth at any cost, but building something sustainable and trustworthy. Bootstrapping means we may grow more slowly, but it also ensures we stay true to our values and end up exactly where we want to be.

Sustainability 🌱

We run on 100% renewable energy and design our software to run even on older devices. Memories should last, and so should the planet.
