Migrating from ente.io

ente next to zeitkapsl

This guide gives you step-by-step instructions on how to migrate your photos from ente.io to zeitkapsl.

💡 Tip: If you have a large library, we recommend doing this process on a stable Wi-Fi or even better LAN connection and ensuring you have enough free disk space.

In case you face any issues during the migration, please feel free to contact us via support@zeitkapsl.eu.

1. Export your data from ente.io

Ente describes the process very well on their website: https://help.ente.io/photos/migration/export/

2. Import into zeitkapsl

Download the zeitkapsl Desktop App from https://zeitkapsl.eu/en/downloads/#desktop

  • Login with your credentials
  • click on the Add directory Button.
  • click Sync
Takeout import

Depending on the size of your takeout this might take a while. You can follow which files are currently being imported.

The zeitkapsl importer analyzes your takeout and recovers Location (GPS) info, timestamps, albums / collections. It also deduplicates your photos and videos, if they are appearing in multiple folders. If a photo/video appears in multiple collections, it will only consume storage once in your account.

3. 🎉 Done!

Your memories are now safe in zeitkapsl — private, secure, and fully under your control. We never see your photos. The import and upload process is fully end-to-end encrypted.

❓ FAQ

  • What exactly is being migrated? zeitkapsl restores your photos and videos from ente export. It also restores your photo metadata, such as location, date, and time. If photos are organized into folders, zeitkapsl will create the same folder structure in your zeitkapsl account— except for generic folders like Photos from 2024, which are easy to rediscover via search (e.g. just type 2024 or December 2024 in the search bar).

  • Why do I have to export the files ente manually? Can’t you directly import from ente.io? Due to the end-to-end encryption, zeitkapsl ensures that your data remains private and secure throughout the entire process. If we would directly import from ente.io, we would have to store your data on our servers unencrypted, which would compromise your privacy.
