Photo widgets
Photo widgets bring memories from zeitkapsl to your phone's Home Screen. Each widget shows one randomly selected photo and its date. The widget refreshes about once an hour, although your phone may sometimes delay an update to save battery.
Tap the photo to open it in zeitkapsl. Photo widgets do not show videos. Motion Photos and Live Photos are shown as still images.
Before you add a widget
Open zeitkapsl and make sure that you are signed in and your photos have loaded. On Android, return to the Home Screen and tap the widget's refresh button. On iPhone or iPad, leave zeitkapsl open for a moment so it can prepare photos for the widget.
Choose which photos to show
Every widget can use one of these photo sources (all sources exclude hidden and deleted photos):
- All photos: photos from your whole gallery. This is the default option.
- Favorites: photos that you marked as favorites.
- On this day: photos taken on today's date across the years.
You can add several widgets and choose a different source for each one.
Android
Add a photo widget
The names of the buttons may be slightly different depending on your phone.
- Touch and hold an empty area of your Home Screen.
- Tap Widgets.
- Find zeitkapsl and choose zeitkapsl photo.
- Touch and hold the widget, then drag it to the desired place on your Home Screen. Some phones place it automatically instead.
- Choose All photos, Favorites, or On this day.
- Tap Add widget.
You can resize the widget after adding it. Touch and hold the widget, then drag the resize handles that appear.
Use and update the widget
- Tap the photo to open that photo in zeitkapsl.
- Tap the refresh button in the top-right corner to show another random photo.
- The widget also refreshes automatically about once an hour.
Change the photo source or remove the widget
To choose a different photo source, remove the widget and add it again. Removing a widget does not delete any photos or uninstall zeitkapsl.
To remove it, touch and hold the widget, then tap Remove or drag it to the Remove area. The exact action depends on your phone.
iPhone and iPad
Add a photo widget
- Touch and hold an empty area of your Home Screen until the apps begin to move.
- Tap Edit and then Add Widget. On some iOS versions, tap the + button instead.
- Search for zeitkapsl and choose zeitkapsl photo.
- Swipe left or right to choose a size.
- Tap Add Widget, move it to the desired place, and tap Done.
The widget is available in small, medium, and large sizes. An extra-large size is also available on supported iPads.
Choose or change the photo source
New widgets use All photos by default. To change it:
- Touch and hold the widget.
- Tap Edit Widget.
- Tap Photo source and choose All photos, Favorites, or On this day.
- Tap outside the settings to close them.
Use and update the widget
- Tap the widget to open the displayed photo in zeitkapsl.
- The widget refreshes with a randomly selected photo about once an hour. iOS decides exactly when widgets are updated, so a photo may occasionally remain visible for longer.
- There is no manual refresh button on iPhone or iPad. Opening zeitkapsl gives the app another opportunity to prepare new photos for the widget.
To remove the widget, touch and hold it, tap Remove Widget, and confirm. This does not delete any photos or uninstall zeitkapsl.
If no photo appears
- Make sure that you are signed in to zeitkapsl.
- Open zeitkapsl and allow a moment for your photos to load. On Android, return to the Home Screen and tap the widget's refresh button.
- Check that the selected photo source contains photos. For example, Favorites needs at least one photo marked as a favorite.
- If a photo is not already available on your phone, an internet connection may be needed to load it.
On Android, the widget may show No photos found or ask you to open zeitkapsl and sign in. On iPhone and iPad, tap Open zeitkapsl to load memories to open the app and prepare the widget.
